I didn't modify cac and tried it with an onplayerspawned that didn't have any waits but that didn't fix it.
I'll explain why my if thing fixed it in case anyone ever runs into something similar:
Normally(an unmoded game) when a player joins the game and wants to spawn for the first time they have to choose a class before they will spawn.
However with my mod the players have to wait before the end of the wave before they spawn again. When the wave ends all the dead players are spawned automatically with thread [[level.spawnClient]]. Because the players spawn automatically at wave end they don't have to select a class to spawn the first time. And that's what screws it up.
