Try out AVS Video Editor 6.0 it is better in my opinion.

i just use x264 to compress my video in virtualdub, then i compress the audio too separately and thats it

True that it is only 720p but personally I don't care about 720p or 1080p on some shitty YT video. Also your approach is even worse: record at 720p and upscale to 1080p so people can watch it in 1080p. WTF?
I record in 1080p and downscale it so I can upload it faster and be done with it.
